Lakhon Khol Wat Svay Andet is located in Ta Skor Village, Sarika Keo Commune, Lvea Aem District, Kandal Province. This is one of the oldest forms of Khmer performing arts, characterized by the wearing of masks (except for the characters of Preah Ream and Preah Leak). The dancers are exclusively male, and they perform only the Reamker story. The musical accompaniment is provided by a Pin Peat orchestra, complemented by narrators (the “Poul”) who describe the unfolding story to guide the characters’ gestures according to the narrative content. Therefore, the narrator typically plays a vital role in the troupe, as they must possess the most extensive knowledge of the Reamker story; consequently, the narrator often serves as the director, deciding which scenes to cut or adjust based on the available time.

The costumes and jewelry used in Lakhon Khol are exquisite, rivaling those of the Royal Ballet, whether it be a performance from the Royal Palace, a professional troupe, or a local community group. The unique characteristic of Lakhon Khol Wat Svay Andet is that it is not performed solely for entertainment. The local people perform it as a tradition following the New Year, based on the belief of seeking peace and prosperity.
A specific episode that is consistently selected for performance is “Kumbhakarna Blocking the Water,” which is believed to bring peace to the village and ensure abundant rainfall for the upcoming farming season. This community troupe’s traditional performance typically takes place every Saturday following the New Year. Lakhon Khol Wat Svay Andet was inscribed on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding on November 28, 2018.
