Workshop Held on “Transitional Justice: The Legacy of the ECCC and Remembrance Memorials of Cambodia” for Tour Guides
On Friday, August 28, 2026, His Excellency Prak Sonnara, Secretary of State and high representative of Her Excellency Academician Minister Phoeurng Sackona, Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, co-presided over the closing ceremony of the workshop on “Transitional Justice: The Legacy of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) and Remembrance Memorials of Cambodia” at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. The event was co-presided over by His Excellency Hem Kranny Tony, Secretary of State at the Office of the Council of Ministers and Acting Head of Administration of the ECCC, and was attended by 45 Cambodian tour guides.
Jointly organized by the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the ECCC Resource Center, the workshop aimed to enhance the knowledge and professional capacity of Cambodian tour guides in interpreting Khmer Rouge history. The program focused on deepening understanding of evidence related to former M-13, Security Prison 21 (S-21), and the Choeung Ek Genocide Center, highlighting their significance as UNESCO heritage sites while emphasizing transitional justice, trial proceedings, and the ECCC legacy through an evidence-based and responsible approach.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, His Excellency Prak Sonnara stated that the workshop provided a vital platform for sharing knowledge on transitional justice, the legacy of the ECCC, and the role of Cambodian memorials in fostering peace education and global citizenship. He added that the initiative enabled participants to engage in discussions, exchange insights, and share best practices on accurately and responsibly interpreting and communicating history within its social context.
