Bilateral Meeting Between H.E. Academician Dr. Phoeurng Sackona, Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, and H.E. Nayef Al-Fayez, Assistant Director-General of UNESCO
21 July, 2026International News, NewsOn the afternoon of July 21, 2026, H.E. Academician Dr. Phoeurng Sackona, Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, led the Cambodian delegation in a bilateral meeting with H.E. Nayef Al-Fayez, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture, during the 48th Session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, Republic of Korea.On that occasion, Her Excellency the Minister expressed her congratulations to His Excellency on his appointment and the trust placed in him to fulfill the vital role of UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture. She also expressed her gratitude to His Excellency for sending the mission report of the World Heritage Committee and ICOMOS experts, who conducted a mission to Preah Vihear Temple from March 1 to 6, 2026, upon Cambodia’s invitation. Her Excellency the Minister commended the quality of the report, noting its comprehensive, accurate technical nature and how it reflects the actual ongoing situation at Preah Vihear Temple. Furthermore, Her Excellency informed the Assistant Director-General of Cambodia’s intention to host the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage during Cambodia’s term as a committee member from 2026 to 2030.The Assistant Director-General promised to support the request to host the meeting. He also affirmed UNESCO’s and his own personal commitment to closely monitoring the Preah Vihear Temple case, actively contributing to facilitation efforts aimed at easing tensions between the two countries through culture.
